The Shape We Take, 2017
Anyone who has painted with ink or watercolor knows that the most challenging thing about these materials is that they are difficult to control and the outcomes are hard to predict. The water pools and drips in unexpected ways, colors bleed into one another and a carefully planned composition is often swallowed up in unforeseen chaos.
But it is precisely this unforeseen quality that I have embraced and love in this new series of work! Rather than feeling frustrated at my inability to control the materials, I have allowed them to create a story for me. The puddles, splatters, drips and spreading shapes provide the backdrop for the small narrative world in each piece and it is then my job to explore and add meaning to what has been created. Every piece feels like an experiment with an unknown outcome and a collaboration with the materials themselves.
